In acknowledgement of Roger Stoddard‘s
sixty-fifth birthday, the decades that
he has devoted to the study and collection
and preservation of books, and the inspiration
that he has lavished on students and
bibliophiles, we are happy to announce
the forthcoming
publication of Roger Eliot Stoddard
at Sixty Five: A Celebration. A tribute
to
a great bookman and friend!
In 1958 the
legendary William A. Jackson called
Roger Stoddard to the Houghton Library
at Harvard
as his assistant for a term of three years.
Stoddard returned to Brown University and
the Harris Collection of American Poetry
in 1961,
but came back to Harvard in 1965 when he was
appointed Assistant Librarian of the Houghton
Library. He has remained there since, holding
the title of Senior Curator of Rare Books
in the Harvard College Library while
creating an
internationally recognized curatorial career.
Mr.
stoddard is a Senior Lecturer in Harvard
University’s English Department and
leads the course in bibliography that was
initiated
by George Parker Winship and later continued
by Jackson and William H. Bond. Through
his teaching and scholarship, Roger Stoddard
has
introduced young scholars to the mysteries
and delights of bookmanship. He is a prolific
writer
and is currently president of the Bibliographical
Society of America.
On the occasion of Roger
Stoddard’s sixty-fifth
birthday, a group of friends and colleagues
has written and compiled a volume of Rogeriana
to be published in December, 2000.
